BERNALILLO — Three was not a good number for the Portales Rams on Friday night.
Portales suffered a 65-55 loss to Bernalillo, ranked No. 3 in the Albuquerque Journal 3A Coaches Poll, thanks in large part to a 16-6 third-quarter edge for the host Spartans.
Portales coach Mark Gallegos said the Ram defense played well, but the offense could never capitalize.
“In the third quarter, we couldn’t score,” Gallegos said. “We were down six, and we couldn’t score on seven straight possessions. We made seven straight stops (on defense), and we couldn’t score.
“Offensively, we were just out of rhythm.”
The Spartans got 50 of their 65 points from a pair of seniors, A.J. Sanchez and Kenny Chavez. Gallegos thought that the 6-foot, 4-inch Sanchez (28 points) was one of the better posts the Rams will face all year, and Chavez is maybe the best guard in 3A next to Lovington’s Jawaan Payne.
Chris Carter led three Rams in double figures with 17 points. Austin Pullen had 11, while Russell Knudson had 10 before suffering a knee injury in the game’s final minute. Gallegos said he wouldn’t know the severity of Knudson’s injury until Monday.
The Rams will be at Robertson on Monday, and will make their home debut Saturday against Moriarty.
