KINGSVILLE, Texas — Senior guard Will Brown scored the final nine points in a game-opening 13-0 run and Texas A&M-Kingsville went on to beat Eastern New Mexico University 77-69 Saturday afternoon in Lone Star Conference South Division men’s basketball.
Brown led four Javelinas in double figures with 23 points as TAMK (12-6, 3-0 South) extended its winning streak to five and completed a weeklong three-game sweep at home to begin division play.
The Greyhounds (11-6, 1-1) made a game of it, closing to 32-30 at halftime and tying the score twice early in the second half. But they were unable to take the lead, and the Javelinas regained control with a 20-6 run over a span of eight minutes.
Forward Robert Hamilton and guard Richard Gonzalez added 15 points each for the Javs, while center Jamie Barnett had 14 points and seven rebounds. Gonzalez went 4-of-5 from 3-point range.
TAMK shot 56 percent from the field in the second half, hitting half of its 10 3-pointers in that time.
Eastern also put four men in double figures, with junior forward Jamaal Hunnicutt compiling a double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds. Jamal Washington and Irshaun Pinckney scored 14 points apiece, while Kennis Green finished with 12.
Eastern committed four of its 21 turnovers in Kingsville’s early run. The Javs held the Hounds off the board for more than 3 1/2 minutes before junior Travazz Buckley converted a pair of free throws.
Following a steal by Washington, Buckley got Eastern’s first field goal on a dunk at the 15:54 mark. The Hounds pulled within one point four times in the final 10 1/2 minutes of the half before tying the score at 32 and 34 early in the second half.
