Dan Wesley Spalding, 78, of Midland, Texas, died Friday, Jan. 23, 2004.
He was born Dec. 13, 1925, in Sadler, Texas, to Calvin Luther Spalding and Mary Arvilla Harshbarger Spalding.
On Sept. 6, 1952, he married Ena Louis McWilliams Gresham. They spent 35 years in Portales, where he was department chairman and professor in physics, a professor in math and, finally, the assistant academic dean at Eastern New Mexico University. He retired in 1990 and moved to Midland.
Survivors include his wife; two sisters, Helen Wilson of Sherman, Texas, and Lois Whaley of Pampa, Texas; two sons, Joe Brian Spalding (and wife Barbara) of Roswell, Eric Daniel Spalding (Linda) of Kingwood, Texas; a daughter, Jill Kathleen Allen (Larry) of Andrews, Texas; eight grandchildren, Sheryl Spalding McCool, Christopher Spalding (and Amy), Mark Spalding, Robert Spalding, Jerod Spalding, Staci Spalding, Lindsey Allen and Cassey Allen; and two great-grandchildren, Mark McCool and Samuel Spalding.
Memorials may go to the Christian Children’s Home, 324 S. Abilene, Portales, NM 88130 or Home Hospice, 901 W. Missouri, Midland, TX 79701. Burial will be in Resthaven Memorial Park. Arrangements are by Ellis Funeral Home of Midland.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at Ellis Funeral Home.
Pallbearers will be Chris Spalding, Mark Spalding, Robert Spalding, Jerod Spalding, Mark Tisdale and Jim Chatwell.
Honorary pallbearers are Jerry Vosberg, Keith O’Hare, Bob Trout, Dudley Cash, Gary Stain and Bill Pippin.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Joe Page Spalding, and a sister, Kathleen Spalding.
