Dora girls hand Melrose first district loss

DORA — The Dora Lady Coyotes made an effort to stop Melrose six-footers Allison Cochran and Audrey Hemminger, but a combined 40 points and 34 rebounds would suggest they failed.
However, the rest of the Lady Buffs scored just seven points, and host Dora cruised to a 61-47 victory Tuesday night.
Kassandra Clark led Dora (6-9, 2-1 District 4-3A) with 19 points and hit five of the team’s six 3-pointers against Melrose (8-10, 2-1).
Hemminger led all scores with 21 points, while Cochran added 19. Despite what the scorebook showed, Dora coach Bill Stockton said it wasn’t the intent to make Melrose’s other players beat them.
“Actually, we were trying our best to limit them,” said Stockton, who sat out Tuesday’s game with the flu. Assistant Myra Skinner coached the Lady Coyotes.
Jena Bilberry added 15, D’Shawn Pettigrew 12 and Jaci Sant nine for Dora, which hosts Floyd Friday night.

Carlos Ruiz scored 21 to lead a top-heavy Buffalo effort, and Melrose escaped when a last-second putback attempt was off the mark.
Ruiz was one of only four to score for Melrose (11-5, 3-0), which nearly blew a 23-11 first quarter lead.
Chris Russell scored 16, Caleb Dodd added 13 and Brock Graham 12 for the Buffaloes. Clayton Stokes led the Coyotes with 18 points.
Stokes was fouled on a late 3-point attempt, and needed all three to tie the game. After missing the second, Stokes intentionally missed the third. He grabbed the rebound, but his putback attempt rimmed out.
Brent Hayes added 14, with Travis Belcher and Tyler Wilhoit added 10 each for Dora (3-13, 1-2).
