ABILENE, Texas — The Eastern New Mexico University women’s tennis team took a pair of losses against quality competition over the weekend, losing to Abilene Christian 9-0 on Friday and to Hardin-Simmons 7-2 on Saturday.
Both opponents are nationally ranked — ACU is 13th in NCAA Division II while Hardin-Simmons is 23rd in the NAIA. The Zias are now 2-4 for the season, including 2-3 in the Lone Star Conference.
LSC member ACU improved to 10-3 (2-0 LSC), while Hardin-Simmons remained unbeaten for the season at 8-0.
ENMU No. 1 singles player Rhiannon Torrez did not make the trip due to a family matter and as a result everyone else moved up a notch for the Zias, with Portales freshman Sara Bulls stepping into the No. 6 slot. Doubles teams were also affected.
ENMU’s only wins came in singles againsts Hardin-Simmons, with senior Bethanie Nix taking a 6-2, 7-6 (7-2) win over Nancy Chandler at No. 2 and sophomore Erica Kelly winning 10-8 in the third-set tiebreaker after splitting the first two sets 6-2, 1-6.
ENMU’s next outing will be at 9 a.m. Saturday when the Zias host LSC foe Midwestern State at Zia Tennis Complex.
