ROSWELL — Rain was about the only thing that could stop the Portales High Tennis teams in Roswell.
The boys lost only four flights in three matches over a weekend round-robin tournament, while the girls lost just three flights and had one wiped out due to rain.
Both Portales teams claimed first place in the four-team tournament against El Paso Irvin, Goddard High and host Roswell High. The placing for both tournaments had Portales first, followed by Goddard, Roswell and Irvin.
The girls team, the defending Class 1A-3A champion, took a 6-2 win against Goddard on Friday and followed up on Saturday with wins against Irvin (9-0) and Roswell (8-1). Hailey Quick’s Friday singles match against Anna Sidd was canceled due to a wet court, and Portales had already won the match.
Kaycee Quick and Bethany Self, playing No. 5 and No. 6 singles and as the No. 3 doubles team, went a combined 9-0 on the weekend. Morgan Erf (No. 3 singles) and Jessica Bulls (No. 4 singles) won all three of their singles flights, and combined to go 2-1 as the No. 2 doubles team.
Hailey Quick split the two No. 1 singles matches she did play and combined with Rachelle Self to go 3-0 for No. 1 doubles — Self won two of her three matches in No. 2 singles.
Chance Plummer and Chance Acker went undefeated on the weekend for Portales, winning all of their singles flights (Plummer No. 2, Acker No. 6) and going 3-0 in No. 2 doubles. Chris Kirchner won all three matches in No. 3 singles and combined with Bryan Yeast for three wins in No. 1 doubles — Yeast went 1-2 as Portales’ No. 1 singles player.
Travis Holt and Logan Brown each went 2-1 in singles (Holt No. 4, Brown No. 5) and pulled a 3-0 sweep in No. 3 doubles.
Portales will be back in action Monday and Tuesday, as they go to Clovis to face Hereford and Clovis, respectively.
