CLOVIS — The Portales High boys and girls tennis teams pushed their records to 7-2 overall Monday, taking a pair of 9-0 wins against Hereford.
The matches were part of a three-team set previously scheduled for Feb. 13-14, but were delayed due to inclement weather. Portales will finish the series at 3 p.m. today at Clovis.
Both teams had an easy time against Hereford, but the boys had it a little easier. None of the six singles flights, nor the three doubles flights, saw Portales lose more than two games.
Rachelle Self (6-3, 6-2 over Belinda Fangman) and Jessica Bulls (6-4, 6-0 over Kristen Estrada) were mildly challenged in singles, but Portales was never in serious trouble.
Portales will travel to Roswell this weekend, then take two weeks off before hosting Artesia on April 6.
Golf starts hot
Both Portales golf teams were in midseason form Monday, as the season opened at the Tasker Invitiational in Hobbs.
“We would have shot a qualifying score,” girls golf coach Brenda Gomez said, “but we used it as a scrimmage.”
Cassidy Merrick shot an 87 to lead the team, which combined for a team score of 389 (top four scores combined, fifth score thrown out). Roni Gomez shot a 95, followed by Oma Creighton (98) and Michelle Miller (109). Ciara Price finished just behind Miller at 110.
The boys also would have shot a qualifying score, as they combined for a team score of 316.
Dale Welch and Chris Adkins led a surprising early effort for Portales, which would have finished three strokes out of first place had the tournament not been a scrimmage.
Boys coach Greg Poynor said the team is allowed 10 tournaments, plus a scrimmage. In hindsight, the scrimmage might not have been necessary.
“For this early in the season, we’re playing really well,” Poynor said. “If we can keep this up, we ought to qualify easily.”
The boys had a team score of 316, which would have been a qualifying score by 14 strokes. The qualifying score is calculated based on course rating, and a team needs to shoot at or below the score three times to qualify for the state tournament.
Dale Welch led Portales with a score of 76, followed by a 77 from Chris Adkins and an 80 from Trevor Ferguson. Kevin Welch rounded out the team score with an 83, while Matt Parkey shot an 85.
The team will start its regular season April 5-6 in Ruidoso.
