After getting blanked Friday, the Lady Ram softball team made up for it on Saturday.
Portales took third place in the Dexter Tournament, blowing out Eunice 21-3 Saturday in five innings.
The Lady Rams (4-3) led 6-0 after two innings, and put the game on ice with a seven-run fifth. Portales coach Robbie Crowley said that the team didn’t hit very well, but took full advantage of 12 walks.
Ashley Flores went 2-for-3, and also pitched all five innings. Flores was filling in for senior Kassandra Richards, who (with sister Ashleah) missed Saturday’s game due to a prior commitment.
“We just changed our lineup and it worked pretty well,” Crowley said. “I asked (Flores) to step in there and pitch without having practiced a lot. She did really well.”
Crowley said Flores had numerous walks, but allowed just one run against five strikeouts.
Portales lost 7-0 to Jal in Friday’s semifinal.
“They have some good pitchers,” Crowley said. “They’re a good ballclub.”
The Lady Rams play Dexter in a Thursday doubleheader.
