The building once known as Safeway and more recently as IGA will now be known as Super Save.
Tim Russell, who will be the manager of Super Save, said officials from Russell Inc. are trying to complete the purchase of the store from Troy Hinton.
Super Save, located at the corner of West 18th Street and Avenue D, will be open in three to four weeks after it is remodeled, restocked and shined, Russell said. He said no specific date has been set for the grand opening.
“Everything is pretty much wrapped up,” Russell said about the purchase. “We feel Portales needed the store. Especially on that side of town. We’re going to have very competitive prices. I can’t guarantee they’ll be the lowest but I believe our customer service will put us over the top.”
Hinton said he could not comment on the transaction until it is finalized, which he said should be done by today.
Russell said his father, Emory, is the owner of Russell Inc., which owns other stores throughout northern New Mexico and West Texas in Raton, Taos, Springer, Mora, Amarillo and Clovis.
Tim Russell said store patrons will notice one difference when Super Save opens — it will not stock liquor.
Russell said Super Save will still have pharmacy, bakery and deli departments. Super Save will continue to operate the two gas pumps in the parking lot, Russell said. He also said former IGA employees will get the first opportunity as Super Save employees.
“All of the employees have been offered jobs for Super Save,” Russell said. “We would like to see them continue to work for the store. It’s their decision now.”
Russell was the manager of the Hilltop Savings Outlet in Clovis until Saturday. Russell said IGA closed its doors on Saturday night.
