Zia softball team snaps 10-game skid

ABILENE, Texas — Senior Maegan Rhoten hurled a three-hitter and right fielder Kyleigh Harris drove in the winning run Monday as Eastern New Mexico snapped a 10-game losing streak.
Harris’ singled capped a two-run fifth inning as Eastern beat Abilene Christian 3-2 in the opener of a Lone Star Conference South doubleheader.
Heather Cochran scattered 10 hits and Valerie Malkinson drove in a pair of runs as Abilene Christian took the nightcap 4-1.
Rhoten (3-10), who struck out five and walked five, retired the final eight batters after the Wildcats inched within 3-2 with a run in the fifth.
Second baseman Jordan Moore went 3-for-4 and catcher Courtney McClasky homered as the Zias (10-25, 1-11 LSC South ) collected 13 hits in the opener.
In the nightcap, ACU (14-24, 5-7) scored twice in the fifth to break the game open.
Katie Bryan drove in the first run with a triple, and Valerie Malkinson followed with a single to make it 4-1.
Lauren King (3-10) went the distance for Eastern, allowing eight hits while striking out two and walking one.
Eastern, which stranded 11 runners, scored in the first on Jordan’s single.
