ROSWELL — Behind medalist performances from Kevin Welch and Cassidy Merrick, the Portales golf teams swept titles in Tuesday’s District 4-1/3A meet at New Mexico Military Institute.
Welch shot a 68, helping the Rams post a team score of 301 for a narrow win over the host Colts (303) and Lovington (307).
“They all played great, especially Kevin,” Ram coach Greg Poynor said. “To shoot a 68, that is unbelievable.”
Chris Adkins and Matt Parkey each shot 77, Dale Welch 79, and Trevor Ferguson 83 for the Rams. The team score is the combination of the four lowest scorers for each squad.
The reward for winning district was a berth into next week’s state tournament at Kirtland, but Portales had already earned a berth by hitting three qualifying scores early in the season.
Still, the win meant a lot for the Rams.
“It was extra sweet to be able to beat NMMI at NMMI for the district title,” Poynor said. “It gives us some more confidence.
“Right now, our confidence is really high. When we go in, we expect to shoot a good score. We feel like we’re getting better every week, we’re improving every week.”
Merrick shot a 73 to win the girls competition, four shots ahead of teammate Roni Gomez (77). Other scores for Portales included Oma Creighton with 94, Michelle Miller with 102 and Ciara Price 119.
Portales easily won the district with a 346, as Lovington was the only other school with a full team in girls play. The Lady Wildcats shot 392.
Portales coach Brenda Gomez said the 346 was the best score her team had all season.
“ If we can do that next week, we could definitely wind up with a place,” Gomez said. “We could be in contention for first if we do that. I’m just hoping that we’ll shoot close to those numbers next week. We could scare some people.”
