LAWTON, Okla. — The Eastern New Mexico University volleyball team moved into the semifinals of the Lone Star Conference tournament Thursday with a 30-26, 30-28, 16-30, 30-12 victory over Central Oklahoma at Cameron University.
Senior middle blocker Emilie Rodman had 13 kills for the Zias (24-7), who play South Division regular-season champion Abilene Christian (26-7) in a 4 p.m. (MST) semifinal matchup today.
Sophomore Grace George added 11 kills and eight total blocks (two solos) for ENMU while senior Anna Bellum had 10 kills and 23 digs, tying senior Jessica Weeks for the team lead in the latter category.
“Neither team hit well,” ENMU coach Mike Maguire said, noting the teams combined for 68 attack errors. “I think we outserved them and outblocked them.”
The Bronchos (21-9) threatened to get back in the match with a dominating third game, using a 7-0 run to erase a 7-6 deficit and then finishing off the Zias with seven of the game’s final eight points.
But Eastern quickly regained control, taking advantage of six UCO attack errors on the Zias’ first seven points and eventually opening a 19-5 bulge.
“I think the thing was that UCO expended a lot of energy in winning that (third game),” Maguire said. “Even with us not hitting that well, I thought we stepped up. Emilie Rodman did a nice job hitting from the right side, and Lindsay Schiely was steady for us as always.”
Lacie Allen had 13 kills, 17 digs and five block assists for the Bronchos, who finished second during the season in the LSC North. Katie Schult added 12 kills, and Penny Wascovich chipped in 11.
The Zias split their regular-season matches against ACU, losing in five games at Abilene while winning in four at Greyhound Arena.
In Thursday’s second quarterfinal clash, Angelo State defeated Texas Woman’s 29-31, 30-15, 30-28, 30-22. The Rambelles (23-8) take on host and North champion Cameron (19-11) in today’s late semifinal, scheduled for 6:30 p.m. (MST).
