Lady Tigers move into second in District 3-1A

ELIDA — Adrienne Coe scored 16 points Tuesday night as Elida defeated Melrose 50-43 Tuesday night, taking over sole possession of second place in the District 3-1A girls race.
The Lady Tigers (13-6, 3-1 district) held Melrose (9-11, 2-2) to just nine field goals. The Lady Buffaloes, who got 17 points from freshman Janea Eshelman, satyed in the game by sinking 23-of-31 free throws.
In the boys game, Melrose maintained the district lead with a 79-60 victory over Elida, pulling away from a five-point halftime lead with a 43-point output in the second half.
Junior Carlos Ruiz scored 21 points for the Buffaloes (15-4, 4-0) and converted three of the team’s six 3-pointers. Caleb Dodd added 16 points and Tyler Tatum scored 11 for Melrose.
Elida (11-8, 1-3), which led 16-15 at the quarter, put four players in double figures, led by freshman Wesley Gilmore with 20 points. Thomas West added 13, Dylan Radcliff 11 and Trenton Chenault 10.
Tigers coach Darrell Chenault said his young team played well.
“We had some good looks in the third quarter, but they wouldn’t fall,” he said, “and Melrose was able to capitalize.”
