Zias coast to pair of victories over CSW

HOBBS — The Eastern New Mexico University softball team, playing without first-year head coach Armando Quiroz, got solid hitting and pitching Wednesday and swept a doubleheader from host College of the Southwest 8-1 and 10-0.
Quiroz dislocated an ankle and fractured his fibula last week when he stepped on a batting helmet while coaching third base during an intrasquad scrimmage. He had surgery on Friday in Amarillo and will be out of action for at least two weeks.
Graduate assistant Amber Daniel ran the team on Wednesday, and the Zias (3-4) made her day a pleasurable one with 31 hits and complete-game pitching performances from juniors Amanda Nightingale in the opener and Patricia Gonzales in the second game.
The Lady Mustangs, meantime, were playing the first games in the program’s history. CSW is coached by Ron Landschoot, who spent the 2003 season serving as the Zias’ interim head coach after Kathleen and James Rodriguez left ENMU in January to start a program at Division I Texas-El Paso.
“I think we probably would’ve beaten anybody today, with the way we swung the bats,” Daniel said. “And our pitchers were outstanding, especially Patricia.”
Gonzales (1-2) hurled a one-hit shutout in the nightcap, shortened to six innings by the eight-run rule after five. She allowed only a fourth-inning single while walking one and striking out six.
The Zias broke open a scoreless tie with a seven-run third featuring eight hits — all singles. They added their final three runs in the top of the sixth.
Designated player Danielle Flores went 4-for-5, while Christina Helland and Jessica Nocas were both 3-for-4. Helland had an RBI single and a two-run double while Nocas scored two and drove in two.
Nightingale (2-0) also cruised in the opener, allowing five hits with one walk and six strikeouts.
Leading just 2-1, ENMU blew the contest open with a six-run sixth featuring two-run doubles from Tina Whitt and Adriana Reyes, a run-scoring double by Adina Taul and an RBI triple by Helland.
The Zias erased a 1-0 deficit when Tracy Jordan hit an RBI single in the second and Reyes scored on a balk in the third.
Whitt led a 13-hit attack with 3-for-4 while Reyes, Nocas and Courtney McClasky all chipped in a pair of hits.
