Lady Rams whip Roswell

By Kevin Wilson

With their No. 1 seeds in district already locked up, Class 3A Portales and Class 4A Roswell High arguably had nothing to play for Saturday night.
Ashleah Richards and Tara Johnson provided evidence to the contrary, as they keyed a late 10-0 run to help the host Lady Rams win 59-49 and unknowingly snap a 21-game Roswell winning streak in the process.
Both teams are idle until the weekend — Portales (13-11) hosts the District 4-3A title game on Friday, while Roswell (23-3) hosts the 4-4A title game on Saturday.
Portales coach Brenda Gomez didn’t know Roswell’s winning streak had gone that long, and was instead focused on how her team had played.
“I don’t think we were extremely excited with the way we played,” Gomez said. “I was extremely exited with the way some of our players stepped up. They had the opportunity and they took it.”
Some people would say it was best that Roswell had its streak snapped so it wouldn’t be a distraction in the postseason. Apparently, Roswell coach Joe Carpenter doesn’t associate with those people.
“I’ve never believed that,” Carpenter said. “I’m out to win every game. There’s no excuse. We didn’t come out to give this game away. We came out to win a game and we lost.”
After falling behind 25-15 early in the second quarter, Portales inched back and took the lead early in the third quarter on a Morgan Hill putback. Portales never trailed again, but Roswell kept the game interesting throughout.
Sugar Tarin, who scored a game-high 17 for Roswell, knotted the score halfway through the fourth at 47-47 on two free throws.
Then Johnson and Richards made key plays to put the game out of reach.
A right-corner three by Johnson put Portales up for good, then Richards hit a pair of free throws on consecutive possessions and forced a turnover on the ensuing Roswell possession.
