“I think we were a little nervous in the first game, but I was pretty impressed with our defense in the second game,” PHS coach Robbie Crowley said. “I’m happy with (a split). We just got the basketball kids back (Thursday), and we really haven’t practiced yet.”
The team teams played a junior varsity doubleheader on Thursday in Roswell, with the Lady Coyotes squeaking out 9-8 and 10-9 victories.
Portales 25, Eunice 3 — In a bit of a mix-up, Crowley said the Lady Rams ended up playing their JV against the Eunice varsity and their varsity against the Lady Cardinals’ JV.
The Eunice varsity defeated the Lady Rams’ JV 14-4.
Parker and Nusser each pitched two innings while Silva went the fifth in a game called by the run rule after five.
Portales collected 29 hits in the mismatch, including a grand slam by Danielle Vasquez, who went 3-for-4.
Santana Brito was 4-for-5 for the game, while Silva also hit a home run.
“Everybody got at least one hit,” Crowley said. “We’re coming along and starting to fine-tune our team.”
The Lady Rams return to action on Monday when they host Dexter in a twin bill scheduled to begin at 3:30 p.m.
