ELIDA — Tom Sullivan hit a three-run homer and Austin Shrock had a grand slam in Elida’s 10-run third, and the Tigers went on to beat the Texico junior varsity 16-6 on Thursday.
Elida is now 3-9 for the season, but the Tigers are a perfect 3-0 at home. The game was called after 4 1/2 innings because of the 10-run rule.
Sullivan and Thomas West were both 3-for-4 for Elida, while Trenton Chenault hit a pair of run-scoring singles. Chenault pitched the first two innings and Sullivan worked the final three.
Zias lose to St. Ed’s in tennis — At Edmond, Okla., St. Edward’s, ranked 23rd in NCAA Division II women’s tennis, posted a 5-1 victory over Eastern New Mexico University on Thursday in the 12th annual Broncho Invitational, hosted by Central Oklahoma.
The Zias have two more duals on tap both today and Saturday in the event. Duals end when one team reaches five wins.
Despite the loss, ENMU tennis coach Christine Blaeser said her team played pretty well against a tough opponent.
“I think the girls surprised themselves, especially in doubles,” Blaeser said. “The scores aren’t indicative of how well we played. (The Zias) showed themselves they’re not that far behind a team like St. Edward’s.”
ENMU faces Incarnate Word and Drury today in matches set for 8 a.m. and 1 p.m. (MDT), respectively. They then play Rockhurst and Missouri Southern in the same time slots on Saturday.
