C.M. Baker, 91
Services: 10 a.m. Saturday at Calvary Baptist Church in Portales.
Mr. C.M. Baker, 91, of Portales, died Wednesday, April 20, 2005, at Roosevelt General Hospital in Portales.
He was born on March 23, 1914, in Vienna, Ill., to Alpha and George M. Baker.
He came to the Elida area intending to stay a week, but liked the community, and decided to stay, family members said. He worked in the construction of the Bandolier National Monument, and on the roads from Mountainair to Tijeras and between Portales and Roswell. He married Veda Rogers on May 18, 1935. They moved to Amarillo and after a few years they returned to New Mexico. In 1946 they moved to a home on the Floyd Highway. He and his family owned and operated the Neighborhood Grocery on the Floyd Highway from 1946 until the mid 1960s. He helped construct many of the buildings at Eastern New Mexico University. He was actively building houses as recently as 2002.
He was a member of the Calvary Baptist Church.
Family members said his only hobby was woodworking.
He was preceded in death by his parents; eight brothers, George F., Elmer, Oliver, Arthur, Raymond, Duke, Burl and Gilbert Baker; a sister, Alice Kelly; and his wife.
Survivors include a son, Kenneth Baker (and wife, Cody) of Roswell; two daughters, and Melveta Walker and Aileen McAlister (Floyd), all of Portales; six grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandchild; and three sisters, Opal Ware of Morton, Texas, Florence Boyce of Lubbock and Nila Jean Kelley of Richardson, Texas.
The Rev. Wesley McAfee and the Rev. Roy Roach will officiate the services.
Burial will be at Portales Cemetery.
Pallbearers are his grandchildren.
Honorary pallbearers are Leroy Burch, friends and neighbors.
Arrangements are by Wheeler Mortuary of Portales.

Beula V. Clark, 94, of Eudora, Kan., died Wednesday, April 20, 2005, at Eudora Nursing Center.
She was born on Jan. 27, 1911, in Estancia, to Vern and Viola Buckelew Block.
She married Ashby E. Clark on March 5, 1930, in Belen. She moved to Eudora two years ago from New Mexico. She was a homemaker and a Sunday school teacher.
She was preceded in death by her husband.
Survivors include four daughters, Lois Bannister of Eudora, Grace Allen of Los Lunas, Ruth Clock of Admire, Kan., and Lorene Clopp of Virgil, Kan.; three sons, Richard Clark of Belen, and Roy L. Clark and William E. Clark, both of Carbondale, Kan., 21 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
Burial will be at Eudora Cemetery in Eudora, Kan.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Eudora Nursing Center or a favorite church.
