PHS tennis teams knock off Clovis

By Dave Wagner

Portales High’s tennis teams have gotten the better of Clovis for quite a few years, and Thursday’s matchup at the PHS tennis courts was no different.
The Portales boys posted a 7-2 win over Clovis, while the girls notched an 8-1 victory over the Lady Wildcats.
Clovis, though, did take five matches into 10-point tiebreakers after splitting sets, winning three of them.
Three of the six girls singles matches were decided in tiebreakers, while Clovis senior Patricia Gallegos rallying for a 5-7, 6-2 (11-9) win over Lady Rams senior Rachelle Self. Gallegos won the last six points of the tiebreaker to erase a 9-5 deficit.
“Patricia did a good job of coming back in the tiebreaker,” Clovis coach Billie Merritt said. “I was glad to see her fight back.”
Meantime, the Lady Rams (12-2 in duals) won tiebreakers with sophomore Morgan Erf beating Britni Johnson 10-4 at No. 2 and freshman Kassandra Short defeating Kayla Schaap 10-5 at No. 6.
Clovis’ only wins on the boys side also came in tiebreakers, both involving senior Jason Goolsby. He got past the Rams’ Chance Plummer 10-5 at No. 2 singles, and teamed with junior Adam Quintero for a 10-5 tiebreak win over Plummer and senior Chris Kirchner at No. 1 doubles.
“It was good for us to play some close matches,” longtime Portales coach Bill Wahlman said. “It’s good to have that going into the district (tournament).”
The Portales boys (8-6) won handily over the Wildcats in the other five singles matches, losing a total of 11 games.
“We played competitively,” Wahlman said of the boys. “I thought Chris Kirchner played well (in a 6-0, 6-4 win at No. 1 singles), and the others were steady and took care of their business.”
Merritt said her boys doubles teams played reasonably well — notably, of course, Quintero and Goolsby.
“Jason and Adam really had a good match,” she said.
Clovis’ boys fell to 1-3 in dual competition this spring, while the girls are 0-4.
