A Socorro-area man was struck and killed by a road construction vehicle Thursday morning on U.S. 60/84 west of St. Vrain, according to state police.
Melvin Lucero, 56, of Polvadera, an employee of Cutler Construction, was working as part of a road crew when the accident occurred at about 8 a.m., according to a press release from the New Mexico State Police
According to the press release, a vehicle carrying hot-mix asphalt was backing up when it struck and killed Lucero. The vehicle belongs to K. Barnett and Sons construction company of Clovis, according to police.
Investigators with the Office of the Medical Investigator pronounced Lucero dead at the scene, police said. Traffic along the highway was stopped during the investigation.
The driver of the vehicle is not facing any charges at this time, but the investigation is continuing, the press release said.
Family members of the victim could not be reached for comment.
