A Portales man involved in a one-car crash Tuesday night between Clovis and Cannon Air Force Base died Wednesday morning at a hospital in Lubbock.
Danny Ruther, 21, was driving east on U.S. 60/84 when his car hit the median and slammed into a tree on the south side of the road, a preliminary investigation shows.
Ruther was ejected from the vehicle when the car hit the tree, according to Curry County sheriff’s deputies who investigated the incident.
Ruther was transported to Clovis’ Plains Regional Medical Center and then airlifted to Covenant Medical Center in Lubbock, where he died just after 9:30 a.m Wednesday, according to hospital officials.
His grandmother, Diane Ruther, did not know where her grandson was going at the time of the accident, but said he had some friends in the area.
“He was a really easy going kid that everybody enjoyed being around,” she said, explaining that he would stop by her home in Clovis sometimes just to visit. “Not many 21-year-old grandsons will do that.”
She also said her grandson was doing well in life, thinking of going back to school and working hard for Herbert Lumber company in Portales.
The owner of the company, Kenneth Herbert, said Ruther showed a lot of potential over the last six or seven months at the company.
“He was a very bright and energetic kid, very personable to customers,” Herbert said. “I’m saddened that he’s gone.”
Diane Ruther said she is turning to faith to get her through this tragedy.
“I tried real hard to look at it as what God had planned,” she said. “I have to look at it that way or I can’t deal with it.”
Police said the accident investigation is ongoing.
