Age: 43, July 8,1962.
Hometown: Cimarron.
Family: Dena (wife), Hollie,19; Montana,16; Dallas, 13); Phoenix, 11; Aliyah, 3 months.
Hobbies and groups you are involved with, volunteer work: I enjoy reading the stock market and at times I invest.

What do you think of Portales?
“I think Portales is a nice place to live because of the people. I think Christianity is more evident in the southern part of New Mexico.”

Tell us about your parents:
“My father has been a business man for 28 years and has done quite well. He taught me that endurance and hard work usually pays off. We went from living in a tent to living comfortably. My mom is probably the sweetest and most caring person I’ve known. To me she is the closest person to Christ that I know. She strives hard to be like him. I don’t think I’ve ever known anyone that would go out of their way for others as she does.”

How have your children influenced
your life?
“They have influenced my life by altering it for the good. They’ve definitely made me more unselfish. I do what I do so they can have what they need in order to grow and tackle what comes their way.”

Tell us about your spouse:
“My wife is probably the best thing that has ever happened to me. I really believe that God picked her for me. She has a unique relationship with the Lord that has really blessed our family. If I had it all to do over again, I would be right where I am today married to the same lady.”

When you were a kid, what did
you think you would be doing as
an adult?
“I always wanted to be a high school basketball coach. I even went to school to do that. As my father’s businesses grew, it became evident that retail is where I needed to be.”

How did you end up in Portales?
“We felt that Portales was economically capable of handling another grocery store. In the early 1990s we opened Russell’s Super Save for the first time.”

What has kept you in Portales?
“For a two-year span, I did not have a job in Portales I worked at a truck stop in Springer. I commuted back and forth after the first Super Save store closed. My family still lived in Portales. We felt this was the best environment for our family. Soon afterward, IGA became available to purchase.”

What do you enjoy doing with
your free time?
“I enjoy being at home. Whether it’s playing with the kids or in the yard, I like to keep busy. I am not a couch potato.”

What is your greatest hope?
“That my kids will grow up to be honorable citizens. My hope would be that they will marry a Christian partner and raise their children as godly examples.”

What advice would you give to
high school graduates?
“Watch your step. There are many things that you can do in your youth that can altar the way your life unfolds.”

If I could do anything, I would…
“Reward my employees by meeting any and all their needs and wants. I have some really wonderful employees. One thing I can do is tell them that I deeply appreciate their hard work, efforts and honesty.”
