Velma Neville
Services: 10 a.m. Tuesday at Wheeler Mortuary Chapel.
Velma Neville, 93, of Portales died Friday, Nov. 11, 2005 at her home.

She was born Jan. 8, 1912, in Spur, Texas, to Edna Mae and T.F. Danforth.

Her family homesteaded near Lingo when she was in her early teens and she attended school at Lingo. She was trained as a beautician, and established a shop in Portales.
She married Ivan Neville, who had a barber shop across the street, on Sept. 15, 1934 in Clovis.

She and her father built a home on 14th Street where she and Ivan moved in 1936.

She did much of the carpentry work, and made all of the cornice boards for the house, family members said.

She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church, serving as church pianist for many years. She was active the Chapter 26 Order of Eastern Star and was a past Worthy Matron. She and her husband also worked for many years with the Rainbow Girls in Portales.

In later years, she and her husband had a small ranch and ran a few cattle.

Family members said she sewed clothes for her nieces and nephews and also gave several of them piano lessons. She was also an accomplished artist, family members said.
She was preceded in death by her parents; five brothers, Otis, Glen, Lloyd, “Pid” and Fred Danforth; a sister, Faye Montgomery; and her husband.

She is survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
The Rev. Roy Roach will officiate with the assistance of Rev. Wesley McAfee.

Burial will take place at Causey Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Richard Bradfute, Rich Ed Bradfute, John Danforth, Dal Danforth, Gilbert Danforth and Jerry Danforth.
Honorary pallbearers are Gaylen Bobo, Gerald Danforth, Wayne Hawkins, Hap Rogers Danforth, Deyone Montgomery, Ernest Wall, George Tillman and Delbert Brown.

Arrangements are by Wheeler Mortuary Chapel of Portales.
