CARLSBAD — Megan Kabrick scored 18 points and Kaycee Quick added 10 off the bench as Portales took a 59-43 win over Carlsbad in its season opener Tuesday night.

The Class 3A runnerups played without center Morgan Hill, who was home sick, and survived a game where the host Cavegirls shot 31 free throws.

“We were standing up a lot,” Portales coach Brenda Gomez said, “not playing defense like we should and trying to play catchup with the hands.”

Ashleah Richards added nine for Portales, which hosts Muleshoe Tuesday in the first game of a doubleheader with the Ram boys. Briana Hernandez added eight and Tara Johnson seven for the Lady Rams.
