Elida sweeps Tucumcari

ELIDA — After saying goodbye to a friend and teammate, Elida had a prayer answered Tuesday night aginst Tucumcari.

Sophomore Trenton Chenault stole an inbounds pass at halfcourt with one second left and hit a desperation 3-points as the Elida Tigers claimed an emotional 54-51 win over the visiting Rattlers.

Elida took the court wearing armbands in honor of friend and teammate Clayton Ford, who died last week after a car accident and was buried Monday.

“This is just a big win to pull us together and move us forward,” Elida coach Darrell Chenault said. “It’s a big win, Tucumcari’s a good team.”

While Elida showed its ability to survive in a tough game, Chenault said his team still needs to work on turnovers.

Leading scorers for Elida were Wesley Gilmore with 23 and Trenton Chenault and Tom Sullivan with eight apiece.
Josh Villegas had 14 and Jeremy Lopez eight for Tucumcari.

Elida girls 49, Tucumcari 29
The Elida Lady Tigers had an easy time with Tucumcari earlier in the evening, winning 42-29.

Elida took a 20-8 halftime lead only to see Tucumcari battle back in the third with 11 points in the stanza. Elida outscored the visitor in the final quarter 18-10 for the win.

“We were pretty disoriented,” Lady Tiger coach Dan Howard said. “We hustled good and stayed aggressive through it.”
Lindsey Bob Smith led Elida with 15 points, Alicia Cross-Smith had 11 and Kodi Armitage had 10.

For Tucumcari, Jamie Jones was the only player in double figures with 10.

In the junior varsity game, Elida defeated Tucumcari 43-22.

Dora improves to 3-0
EUNICE — The Dora Coyotes got their second road win in as many nights Tuesday as they held off the Eunice Cardinals 49-45 to go 3-0 on the season.

“We got some breaks and got some easy buckets at the end, Dora coach Ty Thatcher said. “They (Coyotes) found a way to get a win. It’s tough to go on the road back to back and get a win. Eunice is a tough place to play.”

After three quarters the score was tied at 35-35. But Dora managed to build a lead early in the fourth and staved off a comeback effort that saw Eunice’s Chris Fite can two consecutive 3-pointers.

J.R. Gonzales led Dora with 13 points, Tyler Wilhoit had 12 and Austin Prewett contributed 10 in the effort.

For Eunice, Fite had 15 and Ulysses Argurano had 9.
