A solid effort wasn’t enough for the Portales Lady Rams to score an upset on the road against Class 5A Hobbs.

The host Lady Eagles rallied late for a 42-41 victory.
“We played pretty solid,” Portales coach Brenda Gomez said. “We had turnovers in some bad spots.”

Hobbs, which scored six of the final eight points, was led by Ashley Jackson’s 21 points. Jackson was Hobbs’ only double-figure scorer. Gomez said that Jackson was by far the toughest matchup and she usually got the best of Portales (5-4).

“We didn’t match up at times with them,” Gomez said. “Overall, it was a good game, espeically for this time of the year.”

Portales had a balanced effort, with Briana Hernandez scoring 11 and Morgan Hill 10. Portales returns to action tonight against Moriarty, the first game in a doubleheader with the Portales boys.
