Portales churches to hold Christmas Day services

Portales churches are preparing for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day and many will be offering worship services with some alterations to normal church schedules.

Normally, pastors and priests conduct services on Saturday evening and during the day on Sunday. However, some have made accommodations because Christmas Eve lands on a Saturday and Christmas Day will be on Sunday. The last time Christmas fell on a Sunday was 1994.

Christmas Eve will offer an opportunity for Portales people to attend a communion service at First United Methodist Church. Harry Riser, First United Methodist Church pastor, said they will have the Traditional Candlelight Communion services beginning at 6 p.m.

“It will be real rich sharing of music,” Riser said. “Different choirs will perform at our services”

At 9:30 a.m. on Sunday there will be church services at the Methodist church.

“It’s been a few years since this (Christmas Day falling on Sunday) has happened,” Riser said. “It’s really special when it does happen. We’re looking forward to this weekend and the spirit of the celebration.”

Dick Ross, interim pastor at the First Baptist Church, is also looking forward to this weekend’s activities in celebration of the birth of Christ.

“It’s a great day,” Ross said. “We’ll have families in from out of town who will share the day.”

People will also have the option of spending time with their families on Christmas Eve at the First Presbyterian Church. There will be Christmas Eve services starting at 11 p.m. on Saturday at the First Presbyterian Church. There will also be Sunday worship services at 11 a.m. on Christmas Day.

“We really elected to have church services this year,” Rev. Clyde Davis of First Presbyterian Church said about having services on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. Davis said he has been an ordained minister with First Presbyterian since 1981. “I enjoy it (services on Christmas Day). It’s a great day to have services. We have a great selection of carols and readings.”

• St. Helen’s Catholic Church members can go to different services this holiday weekend. The “Cuide de los Ninos” Spanish service will take place at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday.
On Christmas Day there will be English services throughout the day. The first worship service will be at 8:45 a.m. The 10:30 a.m. service will have childcare provided. The evening mass is at 5:30 p.m.

• The Trinity Episcopal Church will offer Christmas Day services beginning at 10 a.m. There will be Bible-reading, hymns and music during the services and similar services will be held on New Year’s Day.

• The Third and Kilgore Church of Christ will have Bible classes beginning at 9 a.m. on Sunday. There will also be worship services and the title of the sermon is “The Coming of the Promised One”.

There will also be the “What Child is This?” themed sermon at 5 p.m. at the church on Sunday.

• There will be some alterations to the worship services for this weekend at Central Christian Church. Normally there are worship services on Sunday at 9 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. However, on Christmas Day there will be one service held at 10 a.m. and there will not be Sunday school.
