Area fire fighters were able to put out a grass fire which traveled approximately five miles southeast of Portales on Sunday avoiding injuries and structure damages.

Portales Fire Dept. Chief Raul Muniz said Portales fire fighters responded to the fire which started around 1 p.m. The fire took place eight miles southeast of Portales off of N.M. Highway 88, according to Muniz.

“The cause of the fire has not been determined yet,” Muniz said. “It was warm and windy. Those two things combined made it difficult for fire fighters. We stopped the fire progress at about 2:30 p.m. It took a couple of hours after that to extinguish it completely.”

He said the fire traveled five miles, but the amount of acreage has not been determined, according to Muniz. Muniz said there were no injuries reported from the grass fire. He said there were also no reports of structures because of the fire. Muniz said fire fighters from local fire departments, such as Dora, Arch, Floyd and even from Muleshoe, Texas.

“We made a stand on (Roosevelt) county road 10, it was headed to Texas,” Muniz said. “We were helped by county road crews.”

Arch and Portales residents were able to see a cloud of smoke floating over the area on Sunday afternoon.
