The Portales tennis team kicked off its season with a solid effort against a mixed bag of Clovis’ varsity and junior varsity squads on Monday at the Portales tennis complex.
The Portales boys dominated, with Logan Brown, Matt Tucker, Kyle Adams, Davey Riser, Justin McCasland, and Walker Partin picking up wins as the Rams went 6-0 in singles action. The boys also went a perfect 6-0 in doubles.
Brown, a senior, said this was a good first step toward the team’s goal of winning a state title.
“We need to get to state as a team,” he said. “Last year we got to state for the first time in five or 10 years, but lost in the first round. So this year we have to do better.”
The girls suffered an early setback as sophomore Kassandra Short, slotted as Portales’ number two, sprained her ankle during warmups and was unable to compete.
“It just kind of brought everything down,” Portales coach Michelle Wallis said.
The girls went 1-5 in singles and 0-6 in doubles play. The girls lone winner was Junior Ella Erf who topped Clovis’ Emmi Gibbs with a 6-3, 6-2 win.
“Most of our girls are new players,” Erf said. “So the first couple of matches are going to be learning experiences for them.”
Jayna Nance, Portales’ number four, was strong in defeat, forcing Clovis’ Sara Brody to a tiebreaker before falling 2-6 in the extra game.
