Jal exploded in the extra inning of game one and stayed hot in game two to sweep a doubleheader 10-2, 12-9 against the Lady Rams on Tuesday at the Portales softball complex.
Game one headed to extra innings with the teams tied 2-2. Jal scored eight runs in the top of the eighth to earn the win.
“We just kind of fell apart in the eighth inning,” Portales coach Robbie Crowley said. “They got some hits and we had some errors. It’s that infamous bad inning. I’m not disappointed in the way we played. I think we did pretty fair.”
Tuesday’s were the first games of the year for the Lady Rams (1-4) other than the Clovis tournament two weeks ago.
Crowley said she used the doubleheader to get a feel for her team now that basketball is over and the team has the a full roster.
“I wanted to see some different things,” Crowley said. “I put some different kids in, and I can see what we have now. (The starters) need to be worried, because I’m pretty deep on my bench. We have enough to push each other and to get better every day.”
The Portales bats woke up in the second game, but Jal (2-0) scored 12 runs to score the sweep.
“We came back the second game and we had some errors,” she said. “But we’re going to have errors after one day of practice. I see a lot of potential with this team if they choose to use it.”
Jal coach Jimmy Samaniego was happy with his team’s performance in their opening series.
“We had about a week of practice,” Samaniego said. “So we didn’t know what to expect. We were just trying to get our feet a little bit wet, and I think we did a good job.”
