Rams earn split in home opener

Although his team took only one out of two games against Lubbock Christian, Portales coach Arturo Ontiveros said he is glad his team’s bats got some use.

“The one thing we noticed is — we hit the ball,” Ontiveros said. “We’ve been struggling. The majority of the lineup came up with some big hits and helped us pull out that first win.”

The Rams came from behind to win the first game 10-9, but fell in the second tilt 11-6 Tuesday at Portales High School.

In game one, Portales (4-4) trailed 8-2, but scored six runs in the top of the seventh to send the game into extra innings where they earned the win.

Ontiveros said his team could have taken both contests if they would have played better out of the blocks.

“Our biggest thing we need to fix is our first inning,” he said. “We gave up five runs in the first game and four runs in the second. We just made some costly errors and just some routine stuff like bunt coverages that were blown.”

Ontiveros said he was proud of the way his pitchers stayed focused even when they fell behind early.

“Our pitching was great,” Ontiveros said. “Both guys we threw kept us in the game.”

Senior Justin Gilchrist picked up the win in game one and senior Lynn Pinedo was on the mound for a complete game loss in game two.

Ontiveros said digging out a win in the first game is a good sign for the rest of the season.

“That’s one thing for our character,” he said. “That helps with our confidence. We’re happy to see that. We had a little fight in us even late in the game, and that’s good.
