Local basketball players receive highest honors

Several local area high school seniors received the highest honors in New Mexico high school basketball as they were named to the 2006 North/South All-Star Girls and Boys Basketball teams.

According to a press release from the New Mexico High School Coaches Association, there were eight high school players from Roosevelt County selected to south squads.

The Portales Lady Rams, 2006 state champions, posted four of the 11 players on the 3-A South team. Megan Kabrick, Morgan Hill, Ashelah Richards and Rebekah Gonzales were all selected to the south team. They are all members of a Portales club which dominated Socorro 58-35 at The Pit to capture their fourth state title in six years.

Jerrod Long and Chris Adkins were chosen to the 2006 3-A South boys’ team. The backcourt duo led the Rams to the state tournament where they eventually lost to the Grants Pirates in overtime, 56-43, in the semifinals.

The 3A all-star games will take place at the Wilson Complex on the campus of New Mexico Highlands University on July 14.

Kodi Armitage, one of Elida’s top scorers, was selected to the girls 1A/2A south team. Armitage led the Lady Tigers to the state tournament where they lost to the Tatum Lady Coyotes, 55-36, in the semifinals.

Dora Coyotes’ post player Tyler Wilhoit was selected to the 1A/2A South team. The 1A/2A all-star girls game will take place on June 10 at the Gallup High School. the 1A/2A all-star boys game will take place on July 27 at The Pit in Albuquerque.
