PNT wins five press awards

AMARILLO — The Portales News-Tribune picked up five awards on Saturday from Texas’ Panhandle Press Association.

PNT staffers, along with journalists from the Clovis News Journal, produced a series of reports about the future of Cannon Air Force Base, which earned the PPA’s Community Service award, one of the organization’s top prizes.

Also, PNT associates earned a third-place award for news writing, which provided in-depth coverage of a homicide last March. Columnist Kevin Wilson scored a third-place honor for a series of humorous columns. PNT sports writers earned an honorable mention nod. And the PNT staff received a third-place award for its Web site at

Texas’ Panhandle Press Association includes dozens of small-town newspapers throughout the Texas and Oklahoma panhandles, southwest Kansas and eastern New Mexico. This weekend marked the organization’s 96th annual convention.
