The Portales Municipal Schools Board on Monday approved a contract with an Albuquerque-based architectural firm to design window replacements at the high school.
Superintendent of schools Randy Fowler said the school district will spend up to $219,000 of 2005 capital outlay money on the project, although construction estimates have been closer to $225,000.
Assistant Superintendent Priscilla Hernandez said requests for bid proposals will go out soon for construction and Fowler said he expects the project to be completed sometime this summer.
“This will be a major change in the appearance of the high school and the energy efficiency of the high school,” Fowler said. “The (current) windows are not good at keeping out hot or cold weather. It will look similar to what the cafeteria windows look like now. We’re hoping to do all of the (main) building, but if we can’t, we’ll do the west and north sides first because of their exposure to the elements.”
Hernandez said if there is enough money available, windows at the school’s gymnasium would be replaced as well.
l In other board news, a pickup truck currently leased for use in transporting animals and equipment for agriculture students will now be purchased at a cost of about $31,000. Officials agreed it would save the school district money in the long run.
