SANTA ROSA — The Dora Coyotes doubled their pleasure in the second inning — five times, to be exact — but Santa Rosa rallied for four runs in the bottom of the sixth to pull out an 11-8 victory on Monday.
Dan Massey, Tyler Wilhoit, Casey O’Connor, Ben Massey and J.R. Gonzales hit consecutive doubles to highlight a six-run Dora second, pulling the Coyotes (3-4) into a tie after the Lions scored six times in the first.
Wilhoit then gave Dora an 8-6 lead with a two-run homer in the third, but the Coyotes couldn’t survive Santa Rosa’s late comeback.
“I thought we played well,” said Dora coach Ty Thatcher, whose team opened district play on Friday with a 22-12 win over Floyd. “We had a couple of untimely errors, but we also made a lot of plays.”
Ben Massey took the loss, pitching into the sixth before giving way to Wilhoit.
“Ben struggled a little bit early, but he got it back under control,” Thatcher said.
Santa Rosa beat Dora 8-6 in the junior varsity matchup.
The Coyotes resume their district schedule on Friday at home against Elida.
