EUNICE — Senior Michaela Alexander and sophomore Kandace Bergseiker each posted a pair of individual wins on Tuesday as Portales High’s girls rolled to the team title with 104 points in the Goodman Relays track meet.
Jal was second in the 11-team field with 59 points. In boys competition, Hagerman edged Portales 80-78 to take team honors in an eight-school field.
Alexander took first place in the 3,200 in 13 minutes, 9.55 seconds and the 1,600 in 6:03.76, while Bergseiker won in the 100 with a time of 13.29 seconds and in the 400 at 1:02.49.
Jordan Roehl captured a fifth individual event for the Lady Rams, taking shot put with a heave of 33 feet, 2 inches. The Lady Rams also won three of the four relay events, finishing third in the 400 relay.
Roehl (shot put), Bergseiker (400) and the 1,600 relay notched state-qualifying times.
The boys had five individual winners, all in field events — B.J. Kirven in long jump (18-6), where the Rams took a 1-2-3 sweep; Jacob Brady in discus (133-5); Jerrod Long in triple jump (41-2); Alonzo Ontiveros in javelin (154-4), and Hunter Rackler in high jump (5-10). Long and Ontiveros earned state-qualifying marks.
Portales also picked up a win in the 400 relay, with Zack Vigil, Amador Lujan, Long and Kirven running a time of 45.34 seconds.
“It was a great track meet,” PHS boys coach Glenn Johnson said. “The kids performed well. Any time you can hit a state qualifying mark, it was well worth it.”
The Rams and Lady Rams are back in action today, competing in the Buffalo Relays at Melrose.
