Clovis beats Portales in third-place game

CLOVIS — Jarod Kiser and Jordan Jacobs delivered two-run singles in a six-run third that lifted Clovis past Portales 9-0 in the third-place game of the Clovis Invitational summer baseball tournament on Saturday night at Bell Park.

Emery Sierra tossed a two-hit shutout in a contest called after 4 1/2 innings because of the eight-run rule. He finished with one walk, one hit batsman and seven strikeouts.

Portales’ only hits were a double by Ricky Lovato and an infield single by Kevin Gonzales.

Mario Salazar threw the first two innings for Portales, giving up just one run.

Carlsbad won the championship in what was to have been a 12-team tournament — it became 11 teams when Alamogordo did not show up on Friday — with an 8-3 victory over Hobbs.

Earlier on Saturday, the Rams lost to Hobbs 7-5 in a semifinal game played at Ram Field.

Lovato staked the Rams to a 3-1 lead in the first with a three-run homer before Hobbs rallied back. Salazar had a triple and a seventh-inning solo home run for Portales.

Phil Danbom took the loss for the Rams, going the seven-inning distance.
