Vera Johnson
10 a.m. Wednesday at Wheeler Mortuary Chapel, Portales.
Vera Alice Johnson, 85, of Clovis died Saturday, June 3, 2006, at Retirement Ranch in Clovis.
Born Oct. 25, 1920, in Bokchito, Okla., to Zephery and Samuel North, she grew up in Ogden, Okla. She was active in the school choir that performed at the Cotton Bowl and the Texas 100-Year Celebration. She married Virgil Woodrow Johnson on July 2, 1938, in Mangum, Okla. They lived for a time in Artesia, Mountainair and Portales before moving to Elida in 1951. She was a member of the Elida Baptist Church, Women’s Missionary Union and the Elida Homemaker’s Club. She later became a member of University Baptist Church in Portales.
Family members said she enjoyed arts and crafts and had crocheted an afghan for each grandchild graduating from high school. She volunteered as a caregiver for the local elderly.
She was preceded in death by her parents; five brothers, Herbert, J.B., Eugene, Everett and Clifton North; three sisters, Ola Birdsong, Verna McDonald and Leta Finch; daughter, Patsy Gail Johnson, who died as an infant; and husband, Virgil W. Johnson, who died in 1980.
Survivors include two sons, Jerry Johnson (and wife, Iris) of Portales and Woody Johnson (Linda) of Derby, Kan.; one daughter, Ann Britton Johnson of Garden City, Kan.; eight grandchildren, Tawnia Gaylor, Shawnia Gruen, Leonard Johnson, Tammy Johnson, Kimberly Nusser, Dr. Brian Johnson, Corey Britton and Kristy Britton; seven great-grandchildren, Erika Waters, Dalton and Cassidy Gruen, Dakota and Conagher Britton, Emilia Robinson and Issiah Nusser; and numerous nieces and nephews.
The Rev. Steve Smith will officiate services.
Burial will take place in Portales Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association.

Carolyn Pruit
9:30 a.m. Thursday at Wheeler Mortuary Chapel, Portales.
Carolyn Pruit, 60, of Portales, died Sunday, June 4, 2006, at Plains Regional Medical Center.
Born Nov. 16, 1945, in Portales to Mattie and Carroll Bolend, she grew up in Lovington where she attended school. She then attended Clovis Community College and Eastern New Mexico University in Portales. She had worked for Levi Strauss and also was assistant manager for Town & Country Food Stores. 
Family members said she enjoyed playing bingo and was a competitive dancer, having won several trophies over the years. She was a devoted mother and grandmother who enjoyed being involved in the lives of her family members, they said.
She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Gayle Jones, who died in 2003.
Survivors include three sons, Billy Guthrie (and wife, Tina) of New Braunfels, Texas, and Ronnie Guthrie (Renee) and Jeff Guthrie (Vickie), all of Clovis; two daughters, Leslie Roberts (Terry) of Portales and Donna Webb of Mount Pleasant, Texas; 11 grandchildren, Tye Griffin, Cody and Alexis Ryan, and Ashley, Tamara, Ronnie Lee, Deanne, Rhett, Johnny Lee, Kelsey and Kelly Guthrie; one great-grandson, Jaden Griffin; two brothers, Harold Bolend (Josie) of Longview, Texas, and Carroll Bolend (Pam) of East Mountain, Texas; sister, Brenda Selman of Union Grove, Texas; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Pat Mathis will officiate services.
Burial will be at 3 p.m. (CDT) on Thursday at Red Mudd Cemetery in Spur, Texas.
Pallbearers will be Billy Guthrie, Ronnie Guthrie, Jeff Guthrie, Robby Jones, Tye Griffin and Ronnie Lee Guthrie.
Honorary pallbearers will be all family members and friends.

James McCary

James McCary, 58, of Portales died Monday, June 5, 2006, at his residence.
He was born Aug. 15, 1947, to Elma and Walter McCary in Wichita, Kan., where he grew up and attended school. He attended welding school and following graduation, began working in construction. He retired in 2002. Family members said he enjoyed camping, fishing and spending time in the outdoors.
He was preceded in death by his father.
Survivors include his son, Mikel McCary of Topeka, Kan.; mother, Elma Palmer of Portales; and sister, Elizabeth Cunningham of Portales.
Arrangements are by Wheeler Mortuary of Portales. 

Jean Hall
2 p.m. Tuesday at Portales Cemetery.
Jean Hall, 79, of Clovis died Sunday, June 4, 2006, at Plains Regional Medical Center in Clovis.
She was born Nov. 4, 1926, in Globe, Ariz., to E. C. and Pearl Hunt Luna, and married L.S. (Bud) Hall on Feb. 10, 1944, in Portales. She received her master’s degree from Eastern New Mexico University and taught at Cameo Elementary until her retirement in 1987.
She was involved with the PRMC Auxiliary – Pink Ladies. Family members said she enjoyed bridge club and crossword puzzles, and was also an avid reader and loved to travel. She had a number of close friends and loved spending time with them, according to her family.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and two sons, Tony and Mark Hall.
Survivors include a nephew, Jim Hall (and wife, Judy) of Portales; three great-nephews, Richard Hall (Stacey) of Capitan, Kevin Hall (Julie) of Post, Texas, and Dustin Hall of Portales; cousins, Heber Stewart of Clovis, Bruce Pike (Nina), Sabrina Pike, Nick Pike and Stewart Pike, all of Albuquerque, and Mary Sparks of Missouri; and brother-in-law, Keith Hall of Clovis.
The Rev. Kenneth Broad will officiate.
Burial will be at Portales Cemetery.
Honorary pallbearers will be Lee McKinney, Earl Robinson, O. T. Rozzell, B. E. Sparks, Joe Silivongxay, Morris Foster, Richard Hall, Kevin Hall and Dustin Hall.
Memorials may be made to Christian Campus House or the Building Fund at Central Christian Church.
