Portales to focus on speed

The Portales High Lady Rams basketball team finished up their summer tournament Saturday and head coach Brenda Gomez said she is looking forward to next year.

The Lady Rams went 6-3 in the tournament against teams from Hobbs, Roswell, Texico, Capitan, Goddard and Lovington.

The tournament was held Friday and Saturday at the Portales High School gymnasium.

“It will definitely be a different team because we lost some key players from last year,” Gomez said. “But the last two weekends have given us some positive attitudes about next year’s team.”

Portales graduated three starters and a backup guard from last year’s 24-6 Class 3A state champions.

For the first time in four seasons, Portales will play without 5-foot-10 post Megan Kabrick and 6-foot-1 post Morgan Hill.

Gomez said the team might have lost some key players, but they will have talented new players to take their place.

“We will definitely speed up the game more,” Gomez said, “and we will need to put more pressure on the ball in order to match up.”
