The foundation has been laid — literally — for the new Portales skatepark at Portales Recreation Center.
The opening is scheduled for July 15.
Portales Skatepark Organization member Lorenzo Baca said the concrete has been poured and the slab already has ramps, a pyramid and a fun box for skateboarders and skaters. Portales City employees tore up a portion of the asphalt parking lot to allow the concrete to be poured, he said.
According to Baca, the finishing work was done by Cordova Enterprise workers from Clovis.
“I couldn’t have done it without their (Cordova workers) help,” Baca said. “They donated the labor to do the finishing work. I still would have been out there if it wasn’t for their help.”
He said the next step is to complete the fence around the skatepark.
Baca said Portales Skatepark Organization members are still trying to get more fencing for the 1,400-square-foot park.
He said they will continue fund-raising efforts and looking for grant money.
