Chris Adkins scored 23 points and ultimately led the South to their 92-87 triumph over the North, winning the MVP for his performance during the Class 3A North-South All-Star basketball game Friday at Highlands University in Las Vegas, N.M.
The win marks the South’s second victory in a row over the North All-Stars in the annual event.
“The game went real well,” Adkins said. “(Winning MVP) was a relief after all the hard work I’ve been through playing basketball these last three years.”
Adkins said the two teams were fairly-evenly matched during the first half of the game.
In the second half, towards the end of the game and after a bit of a slump, Adkins said the South team had enough spark left in them to hang on to their lead and come away with the win.
The outcome of the girls’ All-Star game played out a little differently.
Megan Kabrick, Ashley Richards and Rebecca Gonzales represented PHS in the girls’ South All-Star basketball team.
The North dominated the game throughout much of the first and second halves and the end result proved to be no different as the North finished off the South with a 60-51 victory.
“It went by really fast,” Gonzales said. “There was a lot of ball pressure from the North team and us trying to break the full court press.”
