An 88-year-old Portales man was beaten and robbed at his home late Tuesday afternoon. Police said they had no suspects.

Nabor Leal, of 724 W. 15th Lane, was unconscious at the scene and transported to Roosevelt General Hospital and then to a Lubbock hospital, Portales Police Capt. Lonnie Berry said.

Police believe the incident, which Berry termed an aggravated burglary or a robbery, occurred between 4:45 p.m. and 6 p.m. Tuesday at Leal’s residence.

Berry said it appears an unknown assailant entered the residence, struck Leal in the head with a weapon and took his wallet before leaving the residence.

Berry said Leal lives alone, but was found unconscious by family members shortly before 6 p.m.

Berry said police spent all night processing the crime scene and canvassing the area for witnesses and evidence.

Police said they believe only Leal’s wallet was stolen.

Berry said officers have been in close contact with the hospital all morning, but his condition was not stable enough for him to offer any usable information on the crime.
