The Portales Lady Ram volleyball team placed fifth in the annual Zia Invitational volleyball tournament in Roswell over the weekend.
The Lady Rams (7-3) were dropped into the consolation bracket immediately after losing to Los Alamos in the first round in five games; 21-25, 25-22, 12-25, 25-23, and 15-13.
Portales head coach Ruth Chavez says if her girls had avoided some costly mistakes, they could have beaten Los Alamos.
“We had some hitting errors, that cost us,” Chaves said. “(Los Alamos) is a tough team, we played tough against them, we just gave up some opportunities to win.”
The Portales girls re-grouped and defeated Artesia in the second round in three consecutive games; 27-25, 25-15, and 25-14. In the final round of the consolation bracket, the Lady Rams defeated Tatum in four games; 25-8, 21-25, 25-16, and 25-19, to take fifth place.
Last month, Tatum beat Portales in the Clovis tournament. Chavez said things were different this time.
“We hit the ball at them,” she said. “We had a lot of kills, and that was the thing we didn’t do against them in Clovis, we started tipping the ball, and (Tatum’s) just too good defensively, and they got everything up, and we really pounded the ball at them a little better, and played a much better game against them this time.”
The Lady Rams return to Portales to host Goddard, on Tuesday.
