Senior running back Jason Martinez ran for three touchdowns and threw for three more for 291 yards of total offense as the Floyd Broncos earned their first win of the season in Albuquerque Saturday afternoon, 60-14 over Pine Hill.
“We played better than we have all year,” Floyd head coach Rafael Royball said.
The Broncos took the early lead midway through the first quarter as Martinez connected with sophomore Edel Sotelo for a 44-yard touchdown pass.
Sotelo added to the early lead with a 1-yard touchdown run. Sotelo contributed on defense as well, intercepting a first quarter Pine Hill pass, and taking it 58 yards to give Floyd a 19-0 first quarter lead.
The Broncos scored twice in the second quarter, headlined by a 10-yard Martinez connection with sophomore receiver Chay Chenault.
Martinez finished off Pine Hill with a 60-yard scamper in the fourth quarter.
Sotelo finished the game with 101 yards rushing, on 16 carries. The Broncos leading receiver was Chenault hauling in 4 receptions for 139 yards and a touchdown.
Royball was relieved the team got its first win.
“It always helps to get that first win, and it’ll do wonders for their confidence heading forward,” Royall said.
The Broncos (1-4) have a week off, before hosting the Tatum Coyotes Oct. 7. They begin their district schedule a week later, Oct. 13 at Melrose.
