ALBUQUERQUE — The Elida Lady Tigers dropped a couple of games in Class 1A state volleyball pool play on Wednesday at Del Norte H.S., but still earned the top seed from Pool B heading into today’s quarterfinal round.

Elida, which brings a 20-0 record into bracket play, went 4-2 in games to tie for first place in Pool B with Animas. The Lady Tigers got the higher seed, though, on point differential for a 15-7, 13-15 win over Animas.

Elida split with Roy 15-17, 17-15 and swept Carrizozo 15-9, 15-13 in its other two matches. Roy was third in the pool at 3-3, followed by Carrizozo at 1-5.

“We played good,” Elida Coach Darrell Chenault said. “We got off to a slow start against Roy and we finally got it together. We got rid of our jitters.”

In Pool A, Tatum took first place at 5-1, while Fort Sumner was second on point differential over Quemado after both finished 3-3. Clovis Christian was fourth at 1-5.

In semifinal matches today at Tingley Coliseum, Animas plays Quemado and Fort Sumner takes on Roy in 1:30 p.m. matches, while Elida meets Clovis Christian and Tatum faces Carrizozo in 3:15 p.m. starts.

Semifinals are set for 10 a.m. and noon on Friday, with the championship at 5 p.m. Saturday.
