With Christmas a month away, shoppers are busy searching for the perfect gifts for loved ones. However, some parents are simply wondering how they will afford gifts at all.
The Empty Stocking Fund, a Salvation Army Christmas and Freedom Newspapers of New Mexico project, is once again under way. According to Capt. Tammy Ray, the Empty Stocking Fund provides families in need with toys, food and clothing. She estimates as many as 400 children will be helped this year, compared to 958 last year.
“Last year’s number was phenomenal,” Ray said, “and we (Salvation Army) were overwhelmed.”
Each day until Christmas, the Clovis News Journal and Portales News Tribune will feature a profile of a family seeking assistance through the Empty Stocking Fund.
Donations will continue to be accepted through the end of the year, she said.
For information, or to donate to a Salvation Army Christmas project, call Tammy Ray at 762-3801 or visit the Salvation Army on 317 E. Second Street.
