Artesia — Senior guard Cody Thornsbury hit five 3-pointers for 15 points and the Clovis High boys basketball team cruised into the finals of the Artesia Invitational on Friday with a 63-44 victory over Roswell Goddard.
Junior guards Jaden Isler and Bryce Hill added 12 and 11 points, respectively, for the Wildcats (2-0), who take on host Artesia, a 59-49 winner on Friday over Carlsbad, in today’s 7 p.m. finale.
Clovis led virtually the entire game, holding the Rockets to just four points in the second period in building a 32-12 lead at the break.
“It was a good effort,” CHS boys coach J. D. Isler said. “We shot the ball well and defended well, and we have to keep doing that.”
Thornsbury accounted for all but two of Clovis’ 3-point baskets against Goddard’s zone defense.
“They played us a matchup zone, but we penetrated real well and found open shooters,” Isler said. “Cody, Jaden and Bryce all did a good job of keeping us going.”
He said junior forward Layne Strebeck put together “an outstanding rebounding game.”
No one reached double figures for the Rockets. Goddard’s leading scorer was Raul Manzano with nine points, followed by Peyton Cometti with eight.
