LAS VEGAS, N.M. — Several hours after the Lady Rams won the consolation championship in the Clovis tournament, the boys followed suit winning the consolation bracket in the annual Stu Clark tournament in Las Vegas, but they may be there awhile.
Saturday’s winter storm unexpectedly kept the Rams overnight, after a 53-41 Saturday afternoon victory against the Taos Tigers.
“I was real pleased with the kids’ effort,” Rams head coach Mark Gallegos said. “We got down early on by six or eight points, and we made some key defensive stops and from the second quarter, I felt we controlled the game.”
After falling behind early, the Rams were able to finish the first period tied at 12, before outscoring Taos 15 to 7 in the second quarter to take a 27-19 half time lead.
Gallegos said the Rams built a 16-point lead in the second half, before the Tigers outscored Portales 14-11, but the Rams held on to take the consolation championship.
Todd McBroom led the Ram charge with 13 points, followed by fellow senior Chance Sherburne’s 11 points. Senior guard Skyler Partin added 8 points.
“We learned a lot about ourselves,” Gallegos said. “And we have to play Taos on Saturday in our tournament.”
Gallegos said he hopes the weather will allow the boys to leave this morning.
The Rams (5-3) host the Portales Shootout starting Friday at the Portales High School Gymnasium.
