Cannon Air Force Base airmen with positions specific to F-16s will be given new assignments by a relocation team in February, according to a Cannon Air Force Base spokesperson.
A team from Randolph Air Force Base in Texas will assign approximately 300 airmen permanent changes of station Feb. 5-9, according to Staff Sgt. Brandon Seals of the Cannon Air Force Base 27th Fighter Wing Public Affairs office.
Randolph conducts personnel relocation within the Air Force through its Air Force Personnel Center, according to a Randolph spokesperson.
“It only makes sense that a team would be coming from here,” Gabriel Myers of the Randolph Public Affairs office said.
Permanent changes of station will be assigned on an individual basis to Cannon airmen whose positions will be eliminated when Cannon’s F-16 jets are sent to various places across the country, 27th Mission Support Squadron Commander Maj. Donna Pike said.
Other changes of station will be administered “on a normal rotational basis for the remainder of the base,” Pike said.
The deactivation of the 27th Fighter Wing and the reassignment of its jets are part of the Base Realignment and Closure actions recommended by the Pentagon and enforced by a federal commission in 2005.
The commission also requested the Air Force to search for a new mission for Cannon.
In June, Air Force officials announced Cannon’s new mission was with the Air Force 16th Special Operations Wing. The 16th SOW assumes ownership of Cannon in October.
Cannon airmen whose assignments are directly tied to F-16s will also report to their new assignments in October, according to Seals. Many Cannon airmen will remain at Cannon with the new mission, Air Force officials have said.
Cannon’s F-16s will be moved to Dane County Regional Airport, Wis.; Truax Field Air Guard Station, Wis.; Joe Foss Field Air Guard Station, S.D.; Kirtland Air Force Base; Andrews Air Force Base, Md.; Nellis Air Force Base, Nev.; Hill Air Force Base, Utah, and to backup inventory, according to the Air Force Base Realignment and Closure Web site.
