The Roswell Lady Coyotes handed the Portales girls a 52-39 loss Tuesday evening at Roswell High School.
The Lady Rams managed only 12 points in the first half, making just two of 16 shots attempted. Portales head coach Brenda Gomez says the Lady Rams poor shooting was key in the defeat.
“We just didn’t convert on layups, contested or uncontested, short jumpers. We just didn’t finish our shots, and we got shots that we wanted,” Gomez said.
Portales outscored Roswell High 18-13 in the fourth quarter, and the Lady Rams shot better in the second half (8 of 26) but the damage was done, and the Lady Rams lost their ninth game of the season.
“We have to focus on shooting our insides, and it’s not like we don’t work on it. We work on those close to an hour every day. They’ve got to do that mentally and prepare themselves to finish their shots.”
Roswell High senior Samantha Matta led all scorers with 13 points, while the Lady Rams were paced by junior Bethany Self’s 11 points and senior post Kaycee Quick’s 9 points.
“It was a disappointing night. The kids played really hard, that was a positive but we’ve got to play hard and finish. Yeah, I think (Roswell is) really talented but we aren’t 13 points worse than they are.”
The Portales girls (10-9, 2-0) resume District 4-3A action Friday night at Lovington, before traveling to Dexter Tuesday.
